My case study of a publishing house

Analyse a publishing company and the titles it publishes. Why would it try to target different audiences with each magazine that it makes?

The publishing company I will be analysing is Condé Nast Publications. Condé Nast Publications is a very reputable, worldwide publishing company. It was founded by Condé Montrose Nast who took over the famous Vogue in 1909. The highly regarded company is under the management of S.I. Newhouse Jr and it is a part of Advance Publications. Advance Publications have owned the company since 1959. Condé Nast have many main offices around the world i.e. in New York, Milan, Madrid, Tokyo, London, Chicago, Paris and Moscow.

It was in 1959 that S.I. Newhouse Sr bought control of Condé Nast, making it a part of the Advance Publications company which the Newhouse family own. Currently, the CEO of Condé Nast is Charles Townsend.

Condé Nast are known for their extensive ranges of lifestyle magazines, these are magazines that targeted at particular classes and interests. They are also interested in fashion magazines and other areas like travel, food and home. By targeting different audiences with each of their diverse magazine genres they become more appealing to other audiences and thus increasing their revenue.
By 1998 they had an average circulation of over 13million issues a month, with an estimated readership of more than five times that number.
Condé Nast Publications also includes the Fairchild Fashion Group, known before as Fairchild Publications who were their former competitors. Fairchild distribute several winning monthly magazines.
After the December 2007 issue, one of Condé Nast’s longest titles with a paid expansion of nearly 1 million, 106 year old US edition of the House and Garden magazine stopped publication.
Due to a decline in the print media industry in late September 2009, Nast was pushed to cut one quarter of their budget citing a decrease in advertising sales.
October 5 2009 marked the day that Condé Nast revealed the closure of three of their publications: Modern Bride, Cookie Magazine, and Elegant Bride. Similarly, after the November 2009 issue of Gourmet Magazine it ceased monthly publication. In September 2010, the Gourmet brand was reanimated as Gourmet Live, as an iPad app which now delivers new editorial content in the form of interviews, stories, recipes and videos. Gourmet is still available in print, in the form of special editions on newsstands and cookbooks.
Vogue, Glamour, Men’s Vogue and Teen Vogue are some examples of Condé Nast’s fashion and lifestyle publications. Bon Appétit is one of their groceries magazines. They also have travel, technology, culture and golf magazines.
